3. Ashton Gibbs – Pittsburgh Panthers (2009-2012)

Career stats: 12.8 ppg 2.0 rpg 1.9 apg

A two-time All-Big East player, Gibbs never scored less than 14.6 ppg in his three years as a starter. In the 2011 Big East Title team, he was the leading scorer, averaging 16.8 ppg. Gibbs statistically his junior year was one of the best offensive guards in the country, shooting 89% from the charity stripe and ranking third in the country with 49% distance shooting.

2. Sam Young – Pittsburgh Panthers (2006-2009)

Career stats: 13.2 ppg 5.0 rpg 1.0 apg

He showed his scoring potential after his first two years coming off the bench, but few saw what would happen when the forward got increased playing time. In Young’s last two years, he averaged over 18 ppg and ranking in the top-five in scoring in the Big East. In the Elite Eight run in 2009, Young averaged around 23.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg which included a 32-point performance against Oklahoma State. He’s arguably the best pure scorer that Dixon ever had.

1. Carl Krauser – Pittsburgh Panthers (2003-2006)

Career stats: 13.0 ppg 4.2 apg 4.5 apg

Throughout Dixon’s coaching career, he’s always had quality point guard play. But none of them had such an impact as Krauser, who is one of the winningest players in program history. He led Pittsburgh in both scoring and assists all three years as a starter, including a career-high junior season of 16.0 ppg 4.8 rpg and 5.9 apg.

Because Pittsburgh doesn’t have a true recruiting ground, getting a guy from the Bronx like Krauser who personifies the grit and toughness that Pitt Basketball enjoyed under Dixon was a huge pickup. The four-year point guard was the ideal Panther, who orchestrated some of the best years for both the coach and program.
