3. Tennessee Volunteers

Highest program finish: Elite Eight in 2010

The young team took a big jump this past season, becoming co-winners of the SEC regular season. They also have the reigning SEC Player of the Year in Grant Williams, who averaged 15.2 ppg and 6.0 rpg. Not only does the team return their entire starting lineup, but they’ll all be upperclassmen as well.

Why Tennessee can win it all

They’re a bit undersized in terms of sheer height, but Williams and Admiral Schofield form one of the best frontcourts in the country. They will allow offensive rebounds, but statistically speaking those second-chance shots still didn’t go in. This is a team that has no absolute weakness, with the kind of experience and leadership that will carry them possibly to their first title game.

Why Tennessee can’t win it all

The one question mark the Volunteers do have is at the point guard position. For the last couple of offseasons, the coaching staff has brought in transfers to shore up that spot. Sophomore Jordan Bone is the starter and has pretty good numbers based on the 23 mpg played. The question now will be whether that kind of production per 40 minutes will stay the same with more production. If he plays well, then Tennessee should be picked ahead of Kentucky to win the SEC in 2019.
