NCAA Basketball: In-Depth Look at Troy Trojan big man Jordon Varnado
By Bryan Mauro
Expectations for 2018-2019 for Varnado
As mentioned, with a healthy season the sky is the limit for the big man. The NBA, which is the dream for every player who laces them up in College Basketball, is not only a reality but a likely outcome for Varnado. Standing at only 6’6” tall, many may argue that he is not tall enough to play as a post in the NBA. Upon watching the senior forward play, he erases all of that doubt very quickly. Varnado is an athletic and versatile player, who shows that he can play virtually every position on the floor.
Troy enters the year as one of the more intriguing teams in the Sun Belt. The Trojans have the talent to compete with the top teams in the league, but like many teams have some question marks heading into the season. The senior forward hopes that his Trojans can compete for one of the top spots in the Sun Belt. Since the Sun Belt is usually a one NCAA tournament bid league, Troy with the help of Varnado will be playing their best basketball come March.
The forward is a mismatch for virtually every team in this conference. He has the deadly combination of a high basketball IQ to go along with the athleticism to make every play. It doesn’t hurt Varnado’s case that he can also be a deadly shooter from anywhere on the floor.
Next: Should undrafted underclassmen be able to return to school?
With his ability to stuff a stat sheet with blocks, rebounds, and points Varnado should be a lock to be a first team all-conference player and has an outside shot to win the player of the year in the Sun Belt conference. The senior forward would trade it all in for an NCAA appearance to go along with hearing his name called come NBA draft night.
