Kevin Huerter, Maryland

6-foot-7 guard Kevin Huerter surprised many when he kept his name in the 2018 NBA Draft, but it paid off in the end. Huerter was selected 19th overall by the Atlanta Hawks, becoming the first Maryland player since Alex Len (2013) taken in the first round.

Huerter has the athleticism and tools from behind the arc to make a splash with the Hawks. After going 24-58 in 2017-18, Atlanta could certainly use some new talent in their arsenal. He averaged 14.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in his sophomore season while shooting 41.7 percent from the field.

Huerter scored a career-high 26 points last season against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on 7-of-11 shooting from 3-point range. Maryland lost the game but Huerter’s star shined the brightest in that game.

Pair Huerter’s shooting ability with Trae Young and the potential is there for them to be a dangerous backcourt. They’ll still need to find a way to make it work on defense, though. For now, Huerter sits as an underrated player on Atlanta’s roster.
