Big 12 Basketball: Breaking down each program’s 2018 recruiting class
Oklahoma Sooners
Class rankings: 10th in the Big 12, 114th nationally
Commitments: Jamal Bieniemy (143)
The Sooners only had one senior in Khadeem Lattin departing but also loses star Trae Young along with a pair of transfers. They went through the transfer market to get a pair of players that can play right now, but addressing the future is a much bigger concern.
Oklahoma has only one player in the 2018 class, which happens to be the position in most need. Bieniemy is a point guard from Katy, Texas who is a 6’3 three-star prospect. The perimeter for the Sooners is in decent shape for next season but will need reinforcements for the future seasons.
The incoming freshman likely will be a redshirt candidate with the seniors in the fold in front of him. That will be a benefit to the program, as they’ll be able to even out the scholarship numbers over a four-year span.
The key players for Oklahoma besides Bieniemy will be rising sophomore Brady Manek along with Wichita State sharpshooter Austin Reeves. This is a nice nucleus for Lon Kruger and company to work with, but will need the surrounding talent to be better Big 12. They’ve missed on some prospects in previous years, so the 2019 class needs to have some gems in it.
