Small Forward

Minutes allocation (40 total): Lagerald Vick (20), KJ Lawson (17) and Marcus Garrett (3)

It’s going to be fascinating to see the dynamic between Vick and Coach Self. Not only was he not welcomed back with open arms, Self sort of made it clear he didn’t even want him. But Vick didn’t want to sit out a year by transferring and Self could use a senior veteran who knows the team scheme so they seem to have made it work for now.

The 6’5 wing was not only a really good individual defender, he also shot the deep ball at a 37% clip, while contributing on the boards as well. He’ll be the incumbent starter for now, but Vick will be splitting time with KJ Lawson at the wings. Before sitting out a year, he averaged 12.3 rpg and 8.1 rpg as a sophomore with Memphis.

He’s not the best shooter and in some ways might be better-suited play alongside his brother as a forward. But there just isn’t any room at Kansas for him to get minutes so playing as a small forward might be his best shot. But with Garrett and Vick around, he’ll have to compete each day to stay on the court, which means improving his shooting on the perimeter.
