4. P.J. Byrd, VCU Rams

The VCU Rams will have high expectations for point guard P.J. Byrd with limited options at point guard this upcoming season. The Rams will need to replace the contributions of point guard Jonathan Williams, who led them last season with 5.7 assists per game. They’ll also need to replace forward Justin Tillman, but other guys are ready to step up.

Byrd chose the VCU over Boise State despite hailing from the state of Texas. He’s a native of Richmond, Texas but will change addresses to Richmond, Virginia as he extends his basketball career.

The original plan was former Rice Owls point guard Marcus Evans to step in in 2018-19 after sitting out last season. However, Evans suffered an Achilles’ injury back in June that will force him to miss an extended amount of time. With that being said, Byrd is one player expected to fit well with Rhoades’ uptempo style of offense.
