San Diego State Basketball: Analyzing the Aztecs’ 2018-19 rotation
Shooting Guard
Minutes Allocated (40 total): Jeremy Hemsley (10), Devin Watson (12), Jordan Schakel (14), Matt Mitchell (4)
The minutes divided up looks confusing using the traditional position model so let me explain.
Watson is the best playmaker and facilitator, which is why he starts out as the point guard. That being said, he’ll have to play off the ball at times to benefit Hemsley. The reason why is that he shot 39% from three-point range, compared to Hemsley’s 21%. Having a shooting guard that shoots that bad from long-range hurts the team’s offense overall, so he’ll have to play point at times himself. His career assist/TO ratio is even, so that could be a slight issue.
To be clear though, Hemsley is needed on the court. He’s arguably the best perimeter defender on the roster and his senior experience can’t be statistically accounted for. The 6’4 guard will be needed to go up against players like Deshon Taylor of Fresno State and the many Nevada perimeter threats.
The overall bench for San Diego State at this point is very unproven but look for Schakel to become the team’s sixth man next season. He played in every game last year in 14 mpg off the bench, chipping in just a few points a night. He shot under 28% inside the arc but is a good spot-up shooter and can play multiple positions with his 6’6 height. He may take some minutes from Hemsley if his overall game rounds out.
