Basketball runs through the veins of every Butler alumnus, fan, and student. A true “basketball school” in every sense of the term, Butler takes basketball extremely seriously. This program is built on far more than just the two national championship appearances in recent years. In fact, the historical relevance of the program and its arena is just as important in this ranking as the recent success on the court.

Hinkle Fieldhouse, the home of the Bulldogs, is a national treasure when it comes to NCAA basketball. Known as “Indiana’s Basketball Cathedral”, Hinkle opened its doors in 1928 and is a certified National Historic Landmark (since 1987). It is also the site of the championship game in the legendary basketball movie “Hoosiers”. To put it simply, this is a must-visit arena for all college basketball fans at some point.

Even though Hinkle seats less than 10,000 fans at max capacity, the game atmosphere in the building is absolutely incredible. With fans packed to the walls and the sun shining through the windows onto the court, there are few places in the country better to watch a college basketball game. And that doesn’t even include the fact that Butler is incredibly successful at home.

But don’t just take my word for it as a student/fan. Butler Collegian writer and photographer, Jimmy Lafakis, had this to say about the gameday experience:

"“I think everyone gets a boost from playing in Hinkle. Nothing like a Saturday afternoon game with the sunlight shining in from the windows. It’s a special atmosphere. Captivates fans from all across the country. More than just Hoosiers.”"
