NCAA Basketball: Ranking the 25 best college hoops uniforms
By Brian Rauf
10. UMBC’s gold
Twitter nearly broke when UMBC upset Virginia in the NCAA Tournament, but UMBC’s school store website actually crashed. Why? Too many people were trying to buy these beauties. An awesome nickname written in cursive across the chest in a classic color combo is a great way to go.
9. Boston College’s gray
If you can’t tell by now, I’m a big fan of gray uniforms. Adding your city’s skyline to the bottom of your shorts is a great touch that puts Boston College into the top 10.
8. Wake Forest’s gray throwbacks
However, these are the best gray uniforms out there. Black and light gray work well together on their own, but these have just the right amount of gold to make these look especially sharp. The thick black stripes, and having one on just one leg, makes these distinctive.
7. Duquesne throwbacks
Things that look straight out of the 70’s usually aren’t great. That font is absolutely not one of those things. It’s the most beautiful characteristic of these masterpieces.
6. Florida Gulf Coast’s white
FGCU’s color scheme might secretly be the best there is – especially for a school on the coast of Florida. Those colors, plus the cursive writing across the chest, make these special.
5. UNC’s Carolina Blue
Iconic. Carolina blue with the argyle design down the side is perhaps the most iconic look in the game. However, the Heels are only No. 5 because of the way Nike…I mean, Jordan…made ‘North Carolina’ uncomfortably small and crowded.
4. Duke’s blue “throwbacks”
Duke’s jersey design is a classic, and while they’ve thrown out some duds in recent years, these are the cream of the crop in my mind. Using a lot of royal blue is never a bad thing and the only white accents give these the very-appealing-but-rare updated retro look.
3. College of Charleston’s gold
The best mid-major uniform out there and it’s not even close. The perfect shade of gold is accented perfectly with maroon, but it’s the cursive ‘Charleston’ across the chest that really takes the cake. White numbers are a nice touch as well.
2. Notre Dame’s gold
The fact that Notre Dame’s normal colors are not green and gold baffles me, but I digress. The gold looks fresh, the green pops, and the cursive Irish across the chest is absolutely perfect – especially with the shamrock. Plus, the Irish have made the point of wearing these whenever possible in February and March in recent years. If I were them, I wouldn’t have another uniform in my set.
1. Villanova throwbacks
Whether it be the white throwback shown above or the blue one at the start of the article, Villanova takes the cake with these uniforms. A simple, crisp design with a great border around the school name and a color combination that works effortlessly together.
The old-timey logo on the side doesn’t hurt either. It’s no surprise the Wildcats won the national title while wearing these.
