10. Trey Burke, Michigan (2012-13)

Trey Burke wasted little time in showing his stuff after bypassing on the NBA Draft following his freshman season. He formed a lethal backcourt with Wolverines teammate Tim Hardaway Jr., carrying the team all the way to the championship game.

Burke averaged 18.6 points per game, breaking Chris Webber’s school record for most points in a sophomore season. He also led the Big Ten with 6.7 assists per game. His 260 assists for the season easily set a new record in Wolverines history.

Just a few votes separated Burke from second-place finisher Victor Oladipo (h/t ESPN). Other finalists for the award including Doug McDermott, Otto Porter Jr., and Kelly Olynyk.

9. Jalen Brunson, Villanova (2017-18)

If this list was more team-centric, Jalen Brunson would score much higher on the charts. Unfortunately, that’s not the mission of Wooden Award voters.

Luckily, Brunson had a strong squad around him that propelled the Wildcats to a National Championship, in large part due to their star guard.

He was a preseason All-American entering the season, so expectations were high for Brunson; he fulfilled them on every level.

Brunson bumped up his averages in every statistic, averaging 18.9 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game, contributing in every category. He also shot .408 from 3-point distance.

Of course, nothing mattered more to Brunson than winning his second title at Villanova. The Wooden Award was a nice consolation prize, though.

Brunson beat out Devonte’ Graham, Deandre Ayton, Marvin Bagley III, and Trae Young for the award (h/t ESPN).
