NCAA Basketball: Top 25 college frontcourts for 2018-19
7. Florida State Seminoles
Frontcourt players: Christ Koumadje, Malik Osborne, RaiQuan Gray, Wyatt Wilkes, Mifondu Kabengele, Phil Cofer
Only Michigan State had an argument of being a deeper team at the center position last season than the Seminoles, who played three quality big men at the five-spot the whole time. Ike Obiagu has transferred but Florida State still has plenty to offer.
Koumadje returns for one more year as the towering 7’4 center for the team. He may only be good for 20 minutes at maximum for a game but will still make an impact, averaging 16.1 ppg, 10.2 rpg and 3.6 bpg per 40 minutes.
Kabengele may have the highest potential as any other big on the roster. He averaged 19.5 ppg and 12.6 rpg per 40 minutes as a freshman and is an explosive athlete who can play three different positions on the court. With the starting seniors leaving after 2019, Kabengele could be a national star in college in due time.
What really bolstered the Seminoles frontcourt is the unexpected return of leading scorer Phil Cofer, who was granted a fifth-year by the NCAA. For a balanced team, it was the 6’8 forward most likely to break out with a big individual game.
Not only is Florida State deep in the frontcourt, they haven’t been able to give meaningful minutes to either Wilkes and Gray, two players the program is still high on. They would get minutes on most other teams and will eventually get good playing time after this season. In terms of being well-rounded (offense, defense, and rebounding) the Seminoles will once again have one of the best group of men inside the paint.
