SEC Basketball: Best Players from each team of the 21st Century (2000-2018)
By Logan Butts
Arkansas Razorbacks
Starting Five: Joe Johnson, Ronnie Brewer, Bobby Portis, Jaylen Barford, Moses Kingsley
Bench: Daryl Macon, Jannero Pargo, Steven Hill, Patrick Beverly, Courtney Fortson, Rotnei Clarke, Jonathan Modica, Sonny Weems, Mike Washington, BJ Young, Marshawn Powell, Michael Qualls
MVP: Like Alabama, Arkansas has a lone Conference Player of the Year in this stretch: Portis.
Not sure who is going to run the point with this crew (Beverly off the bench?), but they will be scrappy.
Auburn Tigers
Starting Five: Bryce Brown, Marquis Daniels, Chris Porter, Doc Robinson, Jared Harper
Bench: Mustapha Heron, Jamison Brewer, Adam Harrington, Marco Killingsworth, Toney Douglas, Korvotney Barber, Chris Denson, KT Harrell
MVP: Porter should’ve been the pick here. He was the 1999 SEC Player of the Year but was suspended during his senior campaign in 2000. So, Brown earns the award for leading the Tigers back to the promised land (NCAA Tournament).
Florida Gators
Starting Five: Joakim Noah, Al Horford, Scottie Wilbekin, Udonis Haslem, Chandler Parsons
Bench: Corey Brewer, Taurean Green, Casey Prather, Patric Young, Anthony Roberson, Matt Bonner, Teddy Dupay, Brett Nelson, Nick Calathes
Practice Squad: Matt Walsh, David Lee, Erving Walker, Lee Humphrey, Bradley Beal, Kenny Boynton, Erik Murphy, Mike Rosario, Dorian Finney-Smith, KeVaughn Allen, Chris Chiozza
MVP: Noah was the heart and soul of those back-to-back title-winning teams.
If there is a true challenger to Kentucky’s throne, it’s Florida. They have the most notable (and only?!) college basketball dynasty of the 2000’s. They were the last gasp of multi-year memorable college teams prior to the one-and-done era fully taking over. With Kentucky being the poster boy for that movement, a showdown between the two would be fun.
