NCAA Basketball Recruiting: 5 under the radar recruits who could be “one and done” in 2018-19
3. Montez Mathis, Rutgers
Head coach Steve Pikiell pulled off a Top-50 recruiting class in 2018 and the class’ ceiling should rise based on the success of incoming combo guard Montez Mathis. He ranks 135th nationally in the 2018 recruiting class and 26th overall for his position. Mathis should be a strong addition to the college basketball landscape alongside last year’s freshman leader Geo Baker.
Mathis excelled during his senior season alongside Kentucky-bound point guard Immanuel Quickley as the team’s primary scoring option. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound combo guard scored on all three levels for the team in 2017-18, earning first-team All-League honors by season’s end while at The John Carroll School in Bel Air, Maryland.
Guard depth shouldn’t be an issue for the Scarlet Knights with Mathis in the rotation. He joins Ron Harper Jr., son of former AP All-American Ron Harper (Ohio), as a few freshmen guards to watch in the Big Ten. After the freshman season Baker turned in, look for Mathis to pick up where he left off and then some.
