Shooting Guard

Minutes Allocated (40 total): Christian Vital (15), Jalen Adams (15) and Tarin Smith (10)

When it comes to traditional positions, UConn’s guards are going to be all over the place, playing multiple places on the court early on to see which combinations will work in the backcourt. Assuming that Gilbert is healthy and takes over the primary ball handler position, that leaves the other perimeter players fighting for the other two spots.

One option for the Huskies to use is a common theme in college basketball now – multiple point guards on the court at the same time. Both Gilbert and Smith will give the team two good ball handlers and help create offense for bigs who struggle to create their own.

Another option is using UConn’s star Adams, who led the team with 18.1 ppg and 4.7 apg. He’s proven that he can run the offense as well, although the win-loss column isn’t proof of that.

The starter will likely be Vital, who scored 14.9 ppg as a sophomore and actually led the team with 5.4 rpg as a 6’2 guard. He shot just 38% from the field overall and had more turnovers than total assists but does provide offense to a team who at times were really bad at it. The hope for Vital is that healthy and consistent point guard production will make his life easier on offense as well.
