Coach of the Year: Jay Wright, Villanova

While there are several high-quality coaches in the Big East, Villanova’s Jay Wright is simply the best. It is just the truth. Now with two national titles in the last three seasons, Wright is starting to fill up his trophy case in a hurry. As we look ahead to this upcoming season, he might have to make room for his sixth Big East Coach of the Year award. Even though Villanova is still projected by many to be a top-10 team this season, there are several others who are not as high on the team.

With three senior starters and an impressive amount of depth this season, the Wildcats, even if they are not on the same level as the past couple of seasons, are going to be really, really good. And, considering there is not a strong preseason contender for the Big East title, there is a chance that Villanova ends up running away with the trophy. If that is the case, Coach Wright should be the frontrunner for the award.

Additionally, Coach Wright just seems due to win the award again. Considering Chris Holtmann (Butler) and Chris Mack (Xavier) have taken home the hardware most recently, it is time for Coach Wright to snag another. He is, in my opinion, by far and away the best coach in the conference and I sense that the Wildcats will overachieve based on expectations this season.

Top contenders: LaVall Jordan (Butler) and Ed Cooley (Providence).
