Indiana Basketball: 5 keys for a successful 2018-19 season
Stable point guard play
The lack of a true and proven point guard on the roster might be the biggest weakness for Indiana basketball heading into this season. This is why the emergence of someone as the starting point guard for head coach Archie Miller is so important. Even though there might not be a clear answer as to who will snag this spot heading into the season, there are three clear frontrunners in my opinion.
For starters, rising sophomore Aljami Durham and junior Devonte Green look like strong contenders for the position. Both players are coming off of solid, albeit not tremendous, campaigns. Despite this, Green, in particular, finished off last season strong. Over the course of the Hoosiers’ last nine games (seven starts), the 6-foot-3 guard averaged 9.7 points and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 15-for-30 (50.0%) from beyond the 3-point arc.
Additionally, incoming freshman Robert Phinisee has the potential to be an excellent candidate. A true point, Phinisee is an excellent leader on the court who is capable of stepping in as a do-it-all guard right away. Of course, it is never easy for a freshman to take over such an important role but he might just be the best option for the job. It will be interesting to see just who is selected to lead the offense.
