8. Matthias Tass – Center – Saint Mary’s

The Saint Mary’s Gaels were another mid-major team to strike it big on the 2018 recruiting trail. Big man Matthias Tass selected the Gaels over Power 5 programs such as Stanford, Georgia Tech and Purdue. At 6-foot-10 and 240 pounds, Tass will be one big man to keep an eye on, particularly for his European roots.

Tass is a native of Estonia, where he’s played on the international circuit for the past two seasons. He turned heads with his play in the FIBA U18 European Championships in August 2017, averaging 11.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game, as his team went on to win the Bronze medal.

He played last season in the KML, one of the top professional leagues in Estonia, where he produced 13.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and 1.6 assists per game. His experience on the European circuit should carry him in his first season with the Gaels, who are looking to replace their stars in 2018-19. Tass will be one big man to watch, especially if St. Mary’s find themselves in the tournament in March.
