5. AJ Green – Point guard – Northern Iowa

The Northern Iowa Panthers had another down season in the Missouri Valley Conference in 2017-18, but help is on the way. In-state four-star recruit A.J. Green (Cedar Falls, IA) chose Northern Iowa over Clemson, Iowa State and Nebraska, showing the power of head coach Ben Jacobson and company. It helps Green’s father (Kyle) is also the associate head coach.

Loyola (IL) was the surprise team from the MVC but the Panthers will look to take that title with Green leading the way at point guard. They won the 2015 and 2016 Conference Tournament championship, but have gone 30-32 in the past two seasons under Coach Jacobson. Tywhon Pickford will have some help in the backcourt this upcoming season after putting up 9.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest in his freshman season.

Green certainly raises the profile of Northern Iowa in the MVC for 2018-19. He ranks 81st overall in the 2018 recruiting class after spending four years at Cedar Falls High School. He’s listed as a point guard, but he isn’t a player you want to leave open behind the arc.
