Washington takes the next step

Of all the returning players for Kentucky basketball this year, PJ Washington seems to be the one with the most potential to emerge as a star for the team. A top-20 recruit from the 2017 class, Washington posted a strong freshman campaign a year ago but still has plenty of room to grow. At 6-foot-8 with a lengthy wingspan, Washington looks to be a future NBA player who can succeed on both ends of the floor.

Statistically, Washington posted 10.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 27.4 minutes per game last season. En route to these counting stats, he shot 51.9% from the field, 23.8% from beyond the arc, and 60.6% from the free throw line. While these efficiency numbers might not be excellent, they provide a quality baseline that the forward can build on.

Furthermore, considering Washington will be able to play alongside Travis while learning from the experienced veteran, this could be a special year for the sophomore. Although not a tremendous playmaker offensively, he is developing as a shooter and is already quite efficient around the basket. He is also a strong defender who can protect the paint well for the frontcourt.
