Duke Basketball: What is the Blue Devil’s identity for the 2018-19 season?

Changes in Defensive Identity
Duke usually runs the same defensive principles. They prefer to run man defense, but they’ve occasionally gone to a zone. They don’t usually press much, which is probably a good thing this year. The lack of depth will keep them from having a strong enough rotation to continue a press.
They might have to move to zone to avoid occasional mismatches, but they hope to run a strict man for the most part. They won’t switch everything, but they should have chances to switch on the wings with Reddish’s length and Barrett’s athleticism. Zion might even be able to switch occasionally if he is responsible for a smaller post.
Overall, this defense will be known for making athletic plays to force tips and turnovers. They’ll be able to run shooters off the line and funnel them into traps and mistakes. It will give up some occasional buckets, but they should make up for it with forcing turnovers.
The biggest hole in their defense will probably be their post play. Williamson has a high enough vertical to make up for his lack of height, but there is still a significant height disadvantage on some 7-foot centers. Without knowing who will be the other post player to step into the role beside Zion, it’s yet to be seen how the other side of the paint will be handled. Zion is strong and aggressive, but it will take more than just him to avoid post moves and second-chance opportunities.
You’re only as strong as your weakest link. Duke has four very strong links, but it will take a fifth for them to get where they want to be this year.
