San Diego State Basketball: 2018-19 season preview for the Aztecs
Key reserves
The Aztecs bench won’t be limited from a numbers’ point of view but they are limited from an experience standpoint. Sophomore guard Jordan Schakel and senior guard Michael Sohikish are the lone returners outside of the projected starting five. Sohikish is entering his final season after averaging just 2.5 minutes of action in 11 appearances. San Diego State will need to find some depth with their five newcomers in 2018-19.
Freshman guard Adam Seiko is coming off a redshirt season in 2017-18. After a year with the program, he’s likely to get a lot of playing time in the backcourt alongside Schakel. Schakel averaged 3.2 points and 2.1 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game through 33 appearances last season. With just five guards in the rotation, Seiko or Schakel could find themselves playing big minutes in the backcourt by season’s end.
Nathan Mensah and Joel Mensah (no relation) are two 6-foot-10 big men from Ghana. Joel ranked 203rd in the 2018 recruiting class while Nathan ranked 209th. Look for them to get some quality time as well as forwards Aguek Arop and Ed Chang, two other incoming freshmen in their 2018 class. They will be a young team but represent Hutcher’s first true recruiting class after coaching his first full season with the San Diego State Aztecs.
