G Anthony Cowan Jr. (JR)

Two seasons ago, Anthony Cowan Jr. was the backup point guard to Melo Trimble. Cowan Jr. was waiting to take over the reigns while still learning. Now he is the leader of the team and he certainly showed that with his play last season.

He led the team in minutes played (37), points per game (15.8), assists (5.1) and steals (1.5). As a junior, whether he decides to declare after this year or stay, Maryland fans should be in for another highlight-filled season from Cowan Jr.

What he has been known for throughout his tenure at Maryland is his ability to drive to the basket, score, and finish or get fouled. He got to the free throw line frequently (191 attempts) and when you have someone like that on your team who doesn’t mind getting hit when getting to the basket, that does a lot for your offense.

Defensively, in games I paid close attention to, he never slacked off on that side of the court. He played tight defense whether the Terps were in man-to-man or zone defense.

He can shoot, he can drive to the basket and play solid defense. Maryland has had some solid point guards come through the program and he will be added to the list when all is said and done.
