Marquette Basketball: What might make 2018-19 a special season?
Hauser Brothers
Just when you thought that one Hauser was tough to handle for defenses, Marquette added another one. By this time, everyone should know that Sam Hauser is one of the best returning players in the Big East. Even though he was overshadowed for much of last season due to Rowsey/Howard’s sensational scoring numbers, Hauser was sensational. Over the course of the year, the 6-foot-8 forward averaged 14.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game while shooting a ridiculous 48.7% from distance (5.6 3PA per game). Oh, and did I mention he was just a sophomore last season?
Now entering his third year with the program, it is reasonable to expect that Hauser will take another step forward. He is already extremely well-rounded as a basketball player and he could emerge as a Big East Player of the Year contender this season. He might be a longshot to win the award but he will be the second offensive option on the team for the first time in his career. If he is able to maintain his ridiculous efficiency numbers on higher volume, then he could seriously threaten for the award.
Enough about Sam, though. His brother, Joey Hauser, is joining the program this season and he is no slouch himself. In fact, Joey is ranked as the No. 52 player in the 2018 class and should be an immediate contributor for the Golden Eagles. He might not be the 3-point sniper that Sam is but Joey can more than hold his own on the court. Considering how much returning talent Marquette has on the roster this season, the addition of Joey has flown under-the-radar a bit to this point but his first season likely won’t be that quiet.
Both players are coming off of injuries (Sam – Hip, Joey – Ankle) as well, so it is possible that they could even exceed expectations when they are fully healthy. That is a scary thought.
