Creighton Basketball: 3 questions heading into 2018-19
By Brett Renner
3. What are the true expectations for the 2018-2019 Bluejays?
The Bluejays have solidified themselves as a real force in the Big East and they have won 20+ games in 3 straight seasons, but this season could be a true rebuilding year for McDermott’s squad. With so many new faces on the roster and the competition in the Big East, it is very hard to predict what the Bluejays are capable of.
It’s hard to think that the Bluejays will improve with having lost so much experience and talent, but they will still be expected to compete in every game. With the high-tempo offense, size and speed, the Bluejays could still sneak in their third straight NCAA Tournament bid.
Creighton will be tested early on in the season when they welcome Ohio State to Omaha in the 2018 Gavitt Tipoff Games on November 15.
Then four days later the Jays will travel to the Grand Cayman’s for the 2018 Cayman Islands Classic where they will take on Boise St. Saint Bonaventure, Georgia State, Akron, Clemson, Georgia and Illinois State represent the rest of the field leaving the Jays with a big opportunity to make a statement early in the season.
Nebraska, Gonzaga, and Oklahoma all have two things in common, they’re talented and they will also play Creighton. With a tough non-conference schedule, Creighton rocks a tough schedule with the Big East looking like a top conference yet again this season.
With Martin Krampelj back healthy, grad-transfer Cashaw stepping in, and three new freshmen joining forces, the Bluejays have a solid foundation to build on for the future. There is still a ton of potential for this team and they have the weapons to succeed.
It isn’t crazy to expect the Bluejays to compete and finish in the top-half of the Big East and to make a run for the NCAA Tournament once again, but they are very much on the bubble.
