Key reserves

Mamadou Doucoure

Mamadou Doucoure is the top scorer returning to Rutgers not currently projected to start for the Scarlet Knights. That isn’t really a good thing since he averaged just 2.8 points per game last year. At least he’s strong on the boards, averaging 3.2 rebounds per game.

Joey Downes

Joey Downes is one of two walk-ons on the 2018-19 roster. His playing time reflects that, as he only played in five games last year. He averaged 0.6 points per game.

Luke Nathan

Luke Nathan is the team’s other walk-on – yes, it’s going to be that kind of season in Piscataway. He managed to get into seven games last season, though he also averaged 0.6 points per game. The New Jersey native will have to show more in his sophomore season.

Caleb McConnell

Caleb McConnell could be a wild card for the Scarlet Knights. The freshman guard doesn’t arrive with nearly the hype Mathis does – McConnell is a 3-star prospect, according to 247 Sports. But on a team with little guard depth and no seniority, he’ll have an opportunity to test his mettle early and often.
