SWAC Basketball: Preseason rankings for 2018-19
By Bryan Mauro
10. Alabama A&M Bulldogs
The Alabama A&M Bulldogs are one of the worst programs in Division 1 basketball. They have won a grand total of 5 games in the last two seasons. Last season was so bad it saw the Bulldogs lose their coach in a year, as he chose to resign his position, instead of coach his team again. The offseason after losing their coach was tumultuous. Alabama A&M has yet to find a permanent coach, and they will be led this year by interim coach Dylan Howard.
A season ago the Bulldogs finished dead last in the NCAA in scoring offense averaging 60.4 points per game. They finished near the bottom in defense as well. They allowed teams to score just over 76 points per game. The 16-point difference in points allowed vs points scored is never going to be recipe for success. The Bulldogs should look at improving those numbers and getting them closer to each other. If they can do that, the win total may improve.
The leading scorer and best player on the team does return to a team who is desperately in need of a star. Arthur Johnson returns and is looking to improve on his 11 points per game average. If Alabama A&M have any hope of winning a couple more games this year and getting out of cellar in the SWAC they will need Johnson and starting forward Andre Kennedy to have breakout years. Since that probably won’t happen as these two players are both seniors. It looks to be more of the same for the Bulldogs.
