Overview for Texas A&M this upcoming season

Head coach Billy Kennedy and the Texas A&M Aggies made a deep run to the NCAA Tournament in 2017-18 but it may be difficult to repeat last season’s results with this year’s roster. There are more questions than answers for the Aggies in 2018-19 but with a solid crop of transfers, they could challenge in the SEC.

In 2016-17, Texas A&M was 13-5 in conference play. Last season, they went 9-9 with one of the best frontcourt duos in college basketball. Now, their strength will come from the backcourt but with little depth from an experience standpoint, they’ll need some players to step up.

Starks and Gilder should carry this squad as should Brandon Mahan and Wendell Mitchell, two quality junior college recruits, but if they struggle, so will the team. Mahan and Mitchell were the only members of the Aggies’ 2018 recruiting class. They do welcome big man John Brown but his production was minimal at Blinn College.

Preseason hasn’t been too kind to the Aggies. In a “secret” scrimmage, they lost to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, 76-72, back on Oct. 23. Some say don’t put too much stock in scrimmages, but the biggest thing that stands out is the lack of offensive production by the starters. Starks finished with 17 points but was the only scorer in double-figures.

Granted, the Lumberjacks had one double-figure scorer but they’re not a Power 5 team. College Station could be in for another long year or they could peak at the right time in 2018-19.
