Virginia Tech Basketball: 2018-19 season preview for the Hokies
Key reserves
Clarke will be missed as the unsung sixth man, a role he played well in 2017-18. Without Clarke off the bench, it leaves the Hokies without an energy guy that can get things going when they’re down. That’s where P.J. Horne comes in. As a freshman, Horne averaged 4.6 points and 2.4 rebounds per game through 28 appearances.
Another guy in the frontcourt to keep an eye on will be freshman Landers Nolley II. The 6-foot-7 wing put up 29.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.9 steals per contest as a senior last season. He’s a threat from behind the arc and can develop as a quality defender given how Buzz Williams likes to play.
The Hokies like to spread the floor and drive and kick to shooters for 3-pointers. They ranked first in the ACC in 2017-18 in 3-point field goal percentage (38.8). They have some other newcomers that can raise their profile from behind the arc. Freshman guards Isaiah Wilkins and Jonathan Kabongo have an opportunity to step into reserve roles in that regard.
