Overview for Virginia Tech this upcoming season

The timing of forward Chris Clarke’s suspension couldn’t have come at a worse time. The Hokies have a scrimmage against the Liberty Flames this Saturday, so it will be interesting to see how they’ll adjust. The season is right around the corner but there’s no need to panic for Virginia Tech just yet.

They still have four of five starters back from last season and have had a strong month of October on the recruiting trail to secure the future. They secured the commitment of 2019 four-star guard Anthony Harris on Oct. 2 and things kept rolling. On Oct. 15, three-star combo guard Andre Gordon committed. Two days later, 6-foot-7 forward Yavuz Gultekin committed. A day later, 6-foot-6 wing Emanuel Miller committed. As it stands, the Hokies’ 2019 recruiting class ranks 16th on 247Sports.

Recruiting aside, they still need to perform on the hardwood. Their depth will be tested early on but it’s times like these where teams tend to come together rather than fall apart. By January, this team should have found its identity, enough so, to keep their fifth-place prediction in the ACC intact. The Hokies should still be a tournament team in 2018-19 but conference play, they’ll really have to defend without getting in trouble. There will be some ugly and unpredictable wins, but that’s just the way Williams likes things.
