Duke vs. Kentucky: 5 biggest questions for 2018 Champions Classic game
3. Who becomes the go-to scorer for Kentucky?
For the last few seasons, one player has risen to become the clear lead scorer for the Wildcats. In 2016 it was Jamal Murray (20 ppg), Malik Monk (19.8 ppg) was the guy in 2017, and last year belonged to Kevin Knox (15.6 ppg). Each of them were freshmen and went on to become lottery picks in the NBA Draft.
There’s a chance that Kentucky’s leading scorer is a freshman as well, with five-star recruits Mongomery, Johnson, Herro, Ashton Hagans and Immanuel Quickley in the fold. However, the odds on favorite to lead the team offensively will be Travis, who has shown to be a great scorer at the college level. He also averaged nearly 20 a game without having the same kind of supporting cast as he does now at UK.
Even with the grad transfer senior joining the team, the Wildcats are still young overall. Like every year, there will be some ups and downs for them. The hope is that having players establishing the proper roles for themselves will limit some of those trials and tribulations.
It won’t necessarily mean that the leading scorer from this game will be the guy going forward but it’ll be interesting to see the amount of shots taken for each Kentucky player. Travis will certainly get in double figures but who joins him will be something to watch.
