Kansas

Just the other night in the Champions Classic, Kansas sophomore Silvio De Souza, a former top recruit, did not play in the Jayhawk’s first game, on a national stage against an excellent Michigan State team. The reason? Why, it’s the FBI probe, of course! Allegedly, De Souza was paid by Adidas consultants with Bill Self’s full knowledge, according to sworn testimony from the most recent Adidas trial.

Kansas is holding De Souza out right now, but I’d be willing to bet that Self doesn’t escape from this without a suspension of some sort, even if it’s self-imposed. It’s a tough blow to Self’s excellent resume that he has put together while in Lawrence. Often mentioned in the same breath as the Krzyzewskis/Wrights/Izzos of the world, Self has lifted Kansas into national prominence as a perennial contender for the National Championship.

The Big 12 title going to the Jayhawks has been almost as constant as death and taxes over the past decade, but these issues threaten to undermine the winning tradition that Self has built. Kansas still is the outright favorite in the Big 12 this year, and for good reason — they are stacked. However, I can’t help but wonder if Self is much longer in Kansas, especially given this kerfuffle that the program currently finds themselves dealing with.
