NCAA Basketball: 5 biggest schools to be probed for alleged corruption
By Daniel Garay
Creighton
Creighton used to be a mid-major darling in the Missouri Valley Conference, often dark horse favorites on brackets across the country, but that ended when they joined up with the Big East following a massive realignment in 2013.
Head coach Greg McDermott has guided the program to massive success since he took over the reigns in 2010, even leading the Bluejays to NCAA Tournament wins in 3 consecutive years. He also had the distinctive privilege of coaching his son, Doug, to a National Player of the Year award and the NBA. I wonder if Greg was allowed to celebrate birthdays and the like with his son — sounds like a ripe ground for NCAA violations.
Unfortunately, there may have been some very real violations allegedly committed — Brian Bowen Sr. claimed that a Creighton official offered him $100,000 and a cushy job for the basketball services of his son.
The Big East is one of my favorite conferences to watch going forward this year, with Villanova and Xavier headlining an extremely intriguing field of teams. Can Chris Mullen carry St. John’s? How will Patrick Ewing do with an exciting young Georgetown team? Unfortunately for Creighton, they will be near the bottom of the league this year.
