5. St. John’s Red Storm

This week: Wins over Loyola (MD) and Bowling Green

Admittedly, St. John’s basketball did not have a strong week whatsoever. In fact, after handling Loyola (MD) in their season-opener, the Red Storm struggled tremendously against Bowling Green and only narrowly came away victorious. And considering the Falcons were picked to finish last in the MAC this year, that is not at all a good sign for the Johnnies.

With this said, though, there is still a very good reason to consider St. John’s a “winner” after this week. And that is due to the fact that the Red Storm’s non-conference schedule is absolutely terrible. To summarize, their schedule is filled with cupcake matchups and there is not a single “resume-building” matchup on the schedule prior to the start of Big East play in late December.

Because of this, avoiding disaster against Bowling Green could pay major dividends down the road. That loss could have been really detrimental to a team that has plenty of talent to go dancing in March but might not have the resume due to their poor expected NCSOS. So, despite the fact that the Red Storm struggled this week, they avoided what would have been a critical loss this early in the season.

Now, though, it is up to head coach Chris Mullin and Co. to fix their on-court issues and improve over the next month and a half without any major slip-ups.
