Creighton Basketball: 3 takeaways from bounce back win over Boise State
By Brett Renner
3. Offense is just one part of the game
As we have all know, Creighton has picked up on offense where they left off last season and on Monday, the Bluejays were scoring just about any way they desired. With that said, we also know that offense is just one part of the game you need to excel in to succeed, and that’s where the worry comes in for this team.
Coming into Monday’s matchup with Boise State, Creighton had more turnovers (42) than assists (36), they were only shooting 62.2% from the free-throw line, and the Jays were minus-5.7 in rebounding margin. Those three stats would give any coach nightmares, and after the debacle against Ohio State, Coach McDermott acknowledged that his team would have to improve in those areas if they wanted to succeed.
After a couple of days of practice and reviewing the film, Creighton turned it around in all three areas in the victory against Boise State. The Bluejays outworked Boise State on the glass after grabbing 32 rebounds to the Broncos 30. The Jays also finished with 23 assists and only 10 turnovers, and a team free-throw percentage of 72.7% (16-22).
While the sample size is small, the young squad showed the ability to learn from and correct mistakes, and that should allow Coach McDermott to get a nice night of rest.
The Bluejays are set to take on Georgia State, Tuesday at 6:30 pm in the semifinal round of the 2018 Cayman Islands Classic.
