Pac-12 Basketball Power Rankings: Arizona State stays on top as UCLA falls
By Brian Rauf
12) Cal Golden Bears (2-3)
LW: 11
Cal snapped a two-game losing streak with a 78-66 win over Santa Clara, but that victory did nothing to dispell any of the concerns surrounding this team. They severely lack depth, rank in the bottom five in the country in offensive rebounding, and are just 333rd in assist percentage – meaning they rely on a lot of one-on-one offensively.
The good news for the Golden Bears is that all five of their starters average at least 10.2 points per game. However, their entire bench combines to average only 13. They won’t improve until their bench does.
11) Washington State Cougars (4-1)
LW: 12
Washington State hasn’t played a single game against a meaningful opponent and already have a loss to Seattle on their resume. However, they get the nod over Cal to avoid the basement of these rankings because of Robert Franks, who is one of the best scorers in the conference.
That said, Wazzu does not have much outside of Franks. The Cougars play a very lackluster non-conference schedule, so we really won’t know how good (or bad) they are until they start Pac-12 play in January.
