1. Gonzaga holds serve – should they have?

Debates between the virtues of Gonzaga and Kansas gripped the college basketball world following strong Feast Week performances from both programs.

The Bulldogs ultimately won that debate in the eyes of the voters, by a mere few points.

Last week brought some interesting tests for that assessment.

Gonzaga dominated North Dakota State but had to rally over Creighton. Kansas only had one game and needed overtime to take care of Stanford. None of those performances really scream “We’re the best team in the country!”

So by default, Gonzaga remained atop the rankings, even picking up some additional first-place votes (perhaps because they played more games).

The Bulldogs have a legitimate opportunity to distinguish themselves as the unanimous No. 1 team in the country this week, with dates against both Washington and No. 7 Tennessee. Impressive wins should leave little doubt who the rest of the country should fear.

Kansas has a good Wofford squad on their schedule this week, but that’s not going to move the needle for voters.

Of course, Duke is nipping at both of their heels.

Gonzaga is the No. 1 team in the country. How this week goes will determine whether they’ll remain there.
