6) BYU Cougars (5-4)

The BYU Cougars have been by far the most disappointing WCC team to this point in the season. Not only have they failed to pick up any quality wins, they are also riding a three game losing streak, including Weber State and Illinois State. The Cougars needed some of last season’s role players to step up in a big way, but Jashire Hardnett has been the only player to take on a primary role on the team.

Even with Hardnett’s strong start to the season, BYU’s offense has been focused on Yoeli Childs and TJ Haws. Childs is averaging 22 points, 11.9 rebounds and 3.4 assist, while Haws is putting up 15.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5 assists. Nick Emery’s return from suspension should provide some relief, but the heavy reliance on Childs and Haws could end up hurting BYU in the long run.

5) Saint Mary’s Gaels (4-4)

The Gaels may have a .500 record, but the strength of that record is what has them in the top half of these rankings. Randy Bennett’s squad hit a rough patch, losing four in a row, but their win over New Mexico St indicates that there is some reason for fans to be optimistic. One of the biggest reasons for excitement has been the play of Jordan Ford, who leads the WCC in points per game.

In addition to Ford, South Florida transfer Malik Fitts has been impressive, averaging 15.1 points and 8.9 rebounds. In contrast, junior guard Tanner Krebs has not seen much improvement in his numbers and has even taken a step back in areas. This season does not appear to be another year of Saint Mary’s playing second fiddle to Gonzaga, but their team is better than their record indicated.
