Big East Basketball Rankings: SJU remains undefeated, DePaul surprising
Creighton was one of the most surprising teams in the Big East early on this season. At the time of my last power rankings for the conference, the Bluejays were sitting near the top of the league thanks to a strong record and wins over Boise State and Clemson. But now that the team has lost three of their last four, all of which by at least 11 points, it is safe to say that the team is seemingly returning to where they were projected in the preseason. And while they could easily still shoot towards the top of the Big East, it does not seem all that likely.
On the whole, Creighton currently stands at 7-4 on the year and boasts the second-best offense in the conference, per KenPom, at No. 14 in the nation. As per usual, head coach Greg McDermott has his team playing at an extremely high level on that end of the court as they can seemingly match many teams bucket for bucket. Additionally, the rise of sophomore guard Ty-Shon Alexander, who is averaging 17.4 points per game, has been a major reason for Creighton’s offensive successes.
On the downside, though, the Bluejays are also ranked as the second-worst defense in the Big East, per KenPom, at No. 122 nationally. This is a huge weakness once again for the team as Creighton’s defense acts like a sieve against top-tier competition. The Bluejays have allowed their opponents to score at least 80 points on five occasions so far this year.
