NCAA Basketball: Best player from each conference entering January 2019
Big South: Chris Clemons, Campbell
Chris Clemons is a pretty well known player amongst mid major fans. The Campbell senior has a knack for putting up video game-like numbers, and is a contender to lead the country in scoring in his senior season.
Clemons is averaging nearly 30 points per game on the season, but his Campbell Fighting Camels are just 6-7. Clemons hasn’t yet had the opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament, and unless Campbell goes on a run, his last chance at dancing is looking dimmer and dimmer by the day.
It would truly be unfortunate if the country didn’t get the opportunity to experience the talent of Chris Clemons this March. Clemons has put up huge numbers in each of his four seasons at Campbell, and is one of the top players in the country, regardless of what his team does.
Big Ten: Carsen Edwards, Purdue
Here is one of our first cases of the clear top team not having a real contender for the top player in the conference. Michigan is a great team, but their balance is a detriment in this case, as Carsen Edwards is easily the top player in the Big Ten.
Edwards was a popular pick for the National Player of the Year heading into the season, and has certainly lived up to that billing thus far, averaging 26 points per game for the Boilermakers.
Purdue has struggled mighty at times in non-conference play, but Edwards has the talent to singlehandedly lift them to the NCAA Tournament. Edwards is arguably the best scorer in the country, and has no problem taking big shots for Purdue down the stretch.
Ethan Happ could put up a solid argument against Edwards, but other than him, nobody comes anywhere close to Carsen Edwards as the top player in the Big Ten.
