Big 12 Basketball: Dedric Lawson and Jarrett Culver lead POY race
By Bryan Mauro
4. Alex Robinson – TCU
When Jamie Dixon took over the Horned Frogs basketball program, he inherited one of the worst power conference programs in America. Since then he has built TCU into a perennial tournament contender. The Horned Frogs are led by senior point guard Alex Robinson. Dixon has placed his trust in the senior guard to lead the offense. When Robinson is on the floor he provides a calming presence for a TCU offense that at times desperately need someone who can lead by example.
The senior guard provides a ton of roster flexibility for the Horned Frogs. Robinson is best suited as a point guard, but he can be just as deadly without the ball in his hands. When former five-star recruit Jaylen Fisher went down with a knee injury last season, Robinson was able to lead the offense and pick up the slack. The senior has not skipped a beat this season. Fisher is still battling injury this year, but it would not have mattered. Robinson has earned every single minute he has been given by Dixon.
The senior guard does not do anything flashy, he plays sound basketball and has a tremendous basketball IQ. The point guard can score, distribute and rarely turns the ball over. His 13.5 points per game to go along with the 8.7 assists per game makes him one of the best point guards in the entire Big 12. The senior has a familiarity with the TCU offense and his tremendous passing skill has enabled him to have an almost 3-1 assist to turnover ratio.
The guard will probably not win this award as the players at the top of the pack are too strong, but he is going to get strong consideration, especially if he keeps up the high level of play. Robinson is the key piece for TCU to continue winning games and return to the NCAA tournament.
