Antoine Davis Asserts Himself As One of The Top Freshman In The Country

There were few teams this off-season that had as interesting roller coaster ride as Detroit Mercy did.  After parting ways with head coach Bacari Alexander, who went a combined 16-47 in two seasons, the Titans took their time finding their replacement in Texas Southern coach, Mike Davis who they introduced in mid-June.  Having seemingly dragged their feet in the hire, not many knew what to expect.

But Mike Davis wasn’t the only Davis to head to Detroit as Antoine, Mike’s son, enrolled at the university.

Antoine, a consensus 3-star recruit, held offers from Houston, Arkansas Little Rock, UMass, UTEP among others and held interest from Nevada and Texas A&M.  But it was Detroit that Antoine chose after his father was introduced as the coach and the younger Davis enrolled as a walk-on.

Since then?  It’s been nothing short of electric.  An absolute dynamo with the ball in his hands, Antoine Davis is currently averaging 27.7 points per outing and is shooting the ball at a crazy .421 clip from long distance.

Davis has gone for 30+ points on six occasions so far this year with every one of these outing being shot at least .400 FG%.  Along with these 30+ games, Davis has eclipsed 40 points twice; once against Loyola Maryland when he went for 42 points, on 14/21 shooting, and the second time being when he torched Wright State for 48 points on an almost fictional 15/24 shooting.

It’s easy to let his scoring take center stage, which is the point of this write up, but Davis is also averaging 3.6 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game.  In six of their eight wins, Davis has dished out at least 5 assists showing that his ability to score AND get those around him involved.

So next time you find yourself discussing the top Freshman in the country, make sure that you’re giving Detroit’s scoring machine some love.
