Wisconsin Basketball: 2018-19 keys for the Badgers to upset Michigan
3. Wisconsin needs to get the crowd cheering
I really wanted to make one slide asking if Ben Brust had any eligibility left. In case you’re not familiar with what happened, he hit a shot in 2013 to take the number three team in the Country, Michigan to overtime. The Badgers would end up pulling one of the craziest upsets in program history that day. A repeat of that would be a very nice reset to the season.
The Kohl Center in Madison can be a very explosive place to play. When Wisconsin is playing great basketball and the students are in town, there are very few arenas that are better. But the Badgers haven’t given much for fans to cheer about the last two times at home.
Minnesota seemed to be in control the entire game up until the end, but costly turnovers killed them. The game against Purdue was down to the wire that needed an extra five minutes to determine the winner, but fans went away unhappy once again. The crowd in Madison hasn’t seen the home team knock off any good teams since Nov. 27.
If only the Badgers can come out making shots, not committing turnovers, playing up to the caliber of defense that Michigan is going to throw at them, we will see the place come to life. D’Mitrik Trice has to shoot the way he did in the first month and a half. Brad Davison needs to take a couple charges. Wisconsin basketball fans love to see that. It makes the rest of the country mad, but that’s why they enjoy it.
The fans at the Kohl Center also love to see when homegrown kids make an impact. More recently that was Sam Dekker, Josh Gasser, Bronson Koenig and Zak Showalter. There would be no better time for Kobe King or Brevin Pritzl to go off. Fans are starting to love the game of Nate Reuvers. It’s been awhile since Khalil Iverson has had a monster dunk. And if Aleem Ford can hit more than one three-pointer, that would be great.
Classes resume on Tuesday so the students may be there. Either way, fans are going to be jacked hosting an undefeated team at the Kohl Center. Even if it is at 11 a.m. local time. And trust me, fans aren’t just going to be talking about what happened in 2013. A few folks in Wisconsin will also be thinking about the time they ended another team’s undefeated run.
