3. Michigan (17-1)

I really don’t know how the Wolverines are third on this list.

Entering Saturday, Michigan had the most impressive resume in the country. The Wolverines were–and still are–4-0 over top-25 opponents with an average margin of victory of 18.5 against ranked teams. They also have notable wins against Providence and at Northwestern.

However, unranked Wisconsin disrupted Michigan’s virtually flawless two months of basketball in a double-digit victory in Madison on Saturday. The Wolverines shot south of 28 percent from three-point land and turned the ball over on 16 occasions.

Michigan has been my No. 1 team for four weeks now, but it has what the No. 2 and No. 1 teams on this list don’t: a loss to a team outside of the top-2, and Michigan’s came at the hands of an unranked opponent.

I thought it was disrespectful that only 9 AP voters slotted Michigan at the top spot in their poll this week. Now, it wouldn’t surprise me to see voters put the Wolverines outside of the top 5 on Monday.

Fortunately, Michigan has plenty of opportunities to prove its worth again over the next two weeks. The Wolverines host Minnesota on Tuesday before heading to Bloomington to face No. 25 Indiana three days later. The following week, John Beilein’s group will play host to Ohio State and then take on No. 23 Iowa on the road.
