9. West Virginia Mountaineers (10-12, 2-7 Conference Play)

Previous Ranking: No. 10

If West Virginia has made one thing clear this season, it’s that this is NOT a typical Bob Huggins team.

This Mountaineers team is nothing short of a pure atrocity on defense, dysfunctional on offense, and has no idea how to beat beatable teams. Oh yeah, and they beat the good teams.

West Virginia has a league-leading seven losses in conference play. Who did those two wins come against? Kansas and Oklahoma, two teams that have been ranked for all or most of the season.

However, those impressive wins mean absolutely nothing if you can’t do anything else of note.

West Virginia led #1 Tennessee for a good chunk of the first half last weekend, before falling just 17. The Mountaineers have given up 85, 93 and 83 points in recent games.

However, that Kansas win was pretty nice. Unfortunately, that game is a mere glimpse of what West Virginia can do when everything is clicking. I don’t need to say it twice–nothing has clicked this year.

West Virginia might be in the cellar this year, but at least they’ve begun to progress towards next season. In addition to adding ESPN top-50 recruit Oscar Tshiebwe in October, the Mountaineers will return several players, including freshman guards Jordan McCabe and Brandon Knapper, who have played well at times.
