Big 12 Basketball: Buy or sell Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Texas Tech
Kansas State Wildcats
Expectation: Make the Final Four
Buy or Sell: Sell
I could quite literally copy and paste the same things I said about Texas Tech for Kansas State and just change the names. Last year, in his sixth season in Manhattan, Bruce Weber finally broke through and got himself off the hot seat, leading the Wildcats to only their second Elite 8 appearance in the last 30 years. With Barry Brown and Dean Wade both back in the fold for their senior season, expectations for what this team can accomplish are reasonably high.
Last year’s team won games with their staunch defense, and the 2018-2019 version of this team is capable of the same thing. Unfortunately, when it comes to their shooting abilities, this team can’t hit the broad side of a barn. The Wildcats true shooting percentage (a measurement of a team’s shooting efficiency that accounts for 2-point field goals, 3-point field goals, and free throws) is an abysmal 51.3%, good for 304th nationally.
If you want to make a deep run in March, you need to be capable of winning in a multitude of ways. Kansas State is unlikely to get the same fortuitous path that unfolded for them last season, and their season is going to come to a halt sooner than many of their fans expect.
