Big 12 Basketball: Buy or sell Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Texas Tech
Kansas Jayhawks
Expectation: Win the National Championship
Buy or Sell: Sell
Give Bill Self and Kansas credit – they are never afraid of challenging themselves. For the past 5 seasons, Kansas has finished the regular season with a top-5 strength of schedule, and this year will be no different. According to one of my previous articles on championship contenders by the numbers, this bodes well for the Jayhawks.
Unfortunately for their fans, there are other factors that go into being a true championship contender, and that’s where this team falls short. Kansas is not a particularly good three-point shooting team, and they are quite terrible from the free throw line. If they cannot improve in one of these two aspects by season’s end, they’re not going to be cutting down the nets in Minneapolis.
The Jayhawks strength of schedule and impressive record thus far will likely net them a top-four seed on Selection Sunday. Just don’t be surprised if this team doesn’t make it out of the first weekend alive. Given their consistent Big 12 dominance (14 straight regular season championships!), a championship run is what the Jayhawks faithful have come to expect.
Considering the blue blood nature of this program and fan base, fans should prepare themselves to be let down by this team this season – don’t shoot the messenger.
