Oklahoma Isn’t Done Yet

The Oklahoma Sooners seem to be following the same path that they took last season. They once again got off to a good start before going through a long losing stretch. They went 12-1 out of conference with their only loss coming against Wisconsin.

They currently have just a 4-9 conference record after they picked up a road win at TCU on Saturday. That win was just their 2nd conference win in their last seven. It gives them a season sweep over the Horned Frogs after they beat them 76-74 early in conference play.

In the most recent Busting Brackets bracketology, they were listed as an 11 seed, though they weren’t playing in the first four in Dayton so we should expect them to stay in the current field.

The Sooners still have a few chances to really bolster their resume the rest of the way. They still have to face Iowa State, Kansas, and Kansas State. The Jayhawks are the only one of those that are at home though so they need to take care of business in their other two games which are home games against Texas and West Virginia.

The Sooners have had a lot of inconsistent play this season but they are led by senior guard Christian James. Through the first 25 games, James is averaging 15.4 points and 7 rebounds per game.

Oklahoma snuck into the NCAA Tournament last season as a 10 seed and it’s very possible they will be in a similar situation this year. They will need at least a couple more wins to get into the field. Even if they win three of their last five they finish with a 7-11 conference record which will turn some people off.

That would be more than enough to get them in, though it seems unlikely that’s what they get. A more realistic path may be going 2-3 in their last five and then winning a game or two in the Big 12 Tournament. The Sooners haven’t been playing good basketball but their NCAA Tournament hopes are still alive and well and with Saturday’s road win they seem to be back headed in the right direction.
