NCAA Basketball: Campbell’s Chris Clemons joins 3,000-point scoring club
Where will Clemons end up on the NCAA scoring list?
Campbell (15-11, 8-4 Big South) is two games behind league leader Radford with four games left. Which means that unless the Camels earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament their season will end after the conference tournament. CU will host High Point (Feb. 21), travel to Longwood (Feb.23) and South Carolina Upstate (Feb. 27) before closing the season at home against Radford (March 2). They are 3-1 versus the four teams remaining on the schedule. However, the Camels are just 3-7 away from home with three of their conference losses coming on the road.
Clemons needs only three more points to surpass No. 8 Hersey Hawkins on the scoring list and will likely at least move up to No. 6 where Harry Kelly (3,066) currently sits. Doug McDermott is fifth on the list with 3,150 points and Alphonso Ford is fourth at 3,165. Meaning that Clemons would have to average at least 28 points over his next five games, taking into consideration that the Camels will play only one conference tournament game, to surpass the latter two players mentioned.
Clemons tallied 32 or more points in each of the first meetings against USC Upstate (32), Longwood (39), and Radford (39). But he knocked down at least 47% of his shots in each of those outings. He did struggle against High Point making five of 19 shots from the field, although he did finish with 23 points. Clemons averages over 23 points a game in his career versus Longwood, Radford and High Point.
