Ivy League Basketball: Top storylines for conference heading into March
The Ivy League Presents a unique, fast paced two day sprint to the finish line to see who will bring home the auto bid.
Since 2002, there have been five different programs to share the conference title; Penn, Princeton, Cornell, Harvard and Yale. Of that group, Yale only won it once in 2016 and Princeton (2004, 2011, 2017) and Cornell (2008-2010) won it three times.
Penn and Harvard have a bit more of a monopoly on the title. The Quakers have claimed the crown six times (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2018) and the Crimson reigned over the conference with a dominance spanning 2012 till 2015.
Still in it’s infant stages, the Ivy League tournament only welcomes the top four programs in the conference who meet for their tiny tourney determined over the course of 48 hours. If the season ended this very moment we would see top seeded Yale meet the young 4 seed Brown, while Harvard and Princeton round it out.
The field isn’t set in stone as Cornell (13-13, 5-5) and Penn (16-10, 4-6) aren’t out of the mix just yet.
When examining the top-6 programs, it could go any way in reality. In theory, Yale has the top player in the conference in Miye Oni, while Harvard boasts arguably the top coach. Led by their top notch guard play, Princeton is liable to make a run and Brown, while lacking an elite game changer, throws everything they have at their opposition. Make no mistake about it, the young Brown Bears are for real.
Cut it whichever way you’d like, but whoever gets their ticket punched will make the Ivy League proud. It feels like change is in the air and a corner has been turned.
It might be time to show the Ivy League some love.
